Confluence is a cultural exchange programme. Mur Nomade invited British sculptor David Reekie to Hong Kong to collaborate with local artist Sunny Wang in a two-person exhibition and a workshop.

The Confluence exhibition puts in perspective an Asian and a European approaches to glass sculpture and installation. It reveals some shared preoccupations such as the research of aesthetics, and a calm and quiet way of conveying strong messages through art. However the exhibition also proposes an interpretation of the way underlying cultures may influence creative practices. A dialogue takes place between David Reekie’s sculptures, which offer a satirist and incisive look at society expanding on the British cartoonist tradition, and Sunny Wang’s installations influenced by elements of Asian culture such as calligraphy, Zen Buddhism and Japanese stone gardens. Glass artworks and installations are complemented by materials related to the artists’ inspirations and working processes: Sunny Wang’s calligraphy and poems, David Reekie’s preliminary sketches and drawings.

At the Confluence workshop, David Reekie, along with host assistant professor Sunny Wang, will introduce his innovative glass technique. It will be an opportunity for participants to make artworks under the guidance of an internationally recognized figure in glass art and exchange ideas and artistic views. David Reekie developed a unique way of colouring cast glass using ceramic enamels, and has been invited to give numerous lectures and teach workshops and master classes in the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Belgium, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

Studio Glass Art is a relatively new medium in contemporary art in the Asian region whereas it derives from a long-standing tradition in Europe. By inviting a leading exponent in the field of Studio Glass Art from Europe, one of the objectives of Confluence is to promote the appreciation of this art form in Hong Kong. Consequently, this project aims at widening the horizon of local art and design practitioners and seeks to contribute to the diversity of art disciplines Hong Kong audiences can enjoy.

Confluence is supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

I About David Reekie I

British glass sculptor David Reekie was born in London in 1947. He lives and works in Norfolk, United Kingdom. David Reekie has been an important presence on the international glass scene for over thirty years. His highly personal and recognizable figurative pieces are influenced by his interest in individual and social relationships. He developed an innovative way of colouring cast glass by using ceramic enamels, and has been invited to participate in exhibitions, give lectures and teach workshops throughout the world.

I About Sunny Wang I

Sunny Wang is an installation artist and glass sculptor, born in Taiwan in 1972. She lives and works in Hong Kong, where she has been instrumental in training the next generation of artists to the practice of studio glass art, assisting in the creation of the only university glass workshop in Hong Kong, at Hong Kong Baptist University. Sunny Wang’s glass sculptures and installations are spiritual metaphors in glass, influenced by her practice of calligraphy, meditation and Zen Buddhism. Sunny Wang’s installation Poetic Stones is currently presented at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, in the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Awards finalists exhibition.

I About Mur Nomade I

Mur Nomade is a curatorial office based in Hong Kong. Our name is the French translation of ‘nomadic wall’. Without being attached to a specific venue, we strive to find the most relevant space for each project.

We work closely with artists to imagine and conceive programmes such as contemporary art exhibitions, artist residencies, collaborative art projects, travel grants, workshops and outreach programmes. Mur Nomade focuses on projects encouraging cultural exchanges and creative encounters.

At Mur Nomade, we like bold ideas and we are convinced that cultural exchanges support creativity, stimulate emulation and encourage experimentation.
