Oriano Galloni Silent Soul      17 June – 25 August 2011

Koru Contemporary Art is excited to announce internationally acclaimed artist Oriano Galloni's Hong Kong debut. Coinciding with the Italian Chamber of Commerce Italian Month the exhibition will feature a range of Galloni’s most recent sculptures and paintings.

Born in Italy, and now currently practicing in New York Galloni combines the traditional marble carving techniques of his birthplace with contemporary sculpting materials and abstract forms, creating work that references Italy’s rich art history whilst also remaining fresh and innovative.

Continuing his exploration of the soul, Galloni incorporates his signature renaissance-esque iconography into new, more experimental situations. His pieces The Man #2, (2006) and Silent Soul/Autunno, (2006) depict his figures encased in aluminium and marble, his audiences are left to question whether the forms are trapped or simply waiting to emerge. The pieces also recall words by Italian sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti’s “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free”. No longer trapped within marble but still not yet free, these works are in a perpetual state of transition and flux.

The exhibition will run from the 17th of June until the 25th of August. Opening night there will be the unique opportunity to meet the artist in person followed by a free Artist Talk about the displayed works on the 18th of June commencing in the gallery from 3:00 pm-bookings will be essential!
