S O L I D       Emma Camden      13 March – 8 May 2010

Koru Contemporary Art is thrilled to be mounting the second solo exhibition of leading New Zealand glass sculptor Emma Camden following her previous sell-out exhibition at the gallery. The new body of work expands on themes previously explored by the artist and seeks to engender a state of serenity and contemplation in the viewer.

Camden continues to incorporate architectural forms such as pillars and pyramids in her work along with expanding on her study of the cruciform and its role as a signifier for western culture.

In a grouping of three deep blood-red works Tomb, Flag and Sword she attempts to convey in glass the semantics of each word; the solemnity of a tomb, the slumping of a flag in a gentle breeze and the sharpness of a sword blade crossing with another. On viewing the works one is taken on a journey through the artist’s process of arriving at the point of resolution for each form.

Describing her thought processes as 'topsy-turvy' Camden was moved to extract colour from some of her work and look at planes and shadows and she does this in her pillar based works. These are free standing but top heavy and beg the question of how do they remain upright? They are angled structures with planes of glass that reflect light at varying angles playing with refraction like a prism.

Perhaps closer in their aesthetic to the European glass sculptors such as Simone Cenedese, these pillar-like works position the viewer to marvel at the process followed to achieve the effect and one can appreciate the end result as a study in geometry.
