Rimu (Dacrydium Cupressinum)
Also known as Red Pine, Rimu is found only in New Zealand. Its fossil pollen grains have been traced back 70 million years. Rimu is a very tall forest canopy tree usually 20 to 30 meters high. The straight trunk can be 1.5 metres in diameter at its base and is easily recognisable by its weeping foliage. Large trees still standing today can be from 600 to 1,000 years old. Rimu heartwood (heart Rimu) is prized as one of the most beautifully grained timbers in the world. It is very durable, being resistant to rot and insect attack. It has been used extensively in house construction and furniture. Rimu is now a protected native species. |
