Alvin was born in 1974 in Hong Kong. He went to Canada in 1989 and later New Zealand in 1995 for his studies. After completing his engineering degree, he returned to Hong Kong in late 1997 to develop his career as a mechanical engineer.

When Alvin was six, he received his first 35mm Praktica and began to learn photography from his mother. The interest was attenuated during his teens, but was rekindled in 2001 when he decided to photograph his surroundings. It gradually became a passion as he learnt to recognize the visual elements of every scenery.
